Physical Activity

Well School students spend an extraordinary amount of time outside, both for Physical Activity (PA) class and daily recesses. Students take part in PA on a weekly basis in the Lower School, and it is part of the daily schedule in the Upper School. The goal of our PA program is to inspire a life-long love of sports, exercise, and movement.

We believe it is vital to give children opportunities to run and play every day and to establish habits that promote health and wellness. Sports offer such opportunities, as well as many valuable lessons: students are encouraged to work as a team, they learn to be competitive in a healthy way, they are faced with disappointment, they build self-confidence, and they are often challenged to overcome personal obstacles or self-doubt.

All of the activities in PA are designed to be age-appropriate, challenging, and fun. Some activities are games, some are skill building for sports, others are aimed at improving fitness, and still others are purely for fun. Most PA classes begin with a warm up run and group stretching. Some of the activities and sports covered throughout the school year in PA include the following:

Running
Soccer
Flag football
Kickball
Dodgeball
Hiking
Ice skating
Hockey
Sledding
Four square
Basketball
Lacrosse
Baseball/softball
Yoga
Fitness training
